UPDATED Master of Prayer Puppet Show this Wednesday Night at JALOPY

Remember my early December post about that book I made for the puppet show, Master of Prayer? Those good folks are performing as part of the fourth anniversary of Roots N' Ruckus at the Jalopy Theater in Red Hook. The puppets (and fiddle, and band of merry puppeteers) go on at 9pm sharp, with other super awesome musical acts. Best of all the whole thing is free. I will be trotting around taking pictures and drawing and admiring the new additions to Jalopy (if they're open--they've claimed the bar-next-door recently). Here's the line-up for Wednesday evening:

MASTER OF PRAYER

A puppet allegory based on the story by Rebbe Nachman.

Based on a story by by the 19th century rabbi, our show tells of a mythical kingdom, thrown into chaos by a great wind. The Master of Prayer, who lives in the woods with his followers, singing and dancing like hippies, hears of a city of riches where people are valued only according to how much money they have, and is compelled to save these poor fools from their money-lust. To this end, they depart together on a journey that takes them through many kingdoms, each one obsessively valuing one trait to the exclusion of all else. Through the journey we learn that whether they worship money, wisdom, prayer, lust, or death, they are all misguided, because a man must have all the colors on his palette in order to paint life's picture.

Some say the protagonist symbolizes Rebbe Nachman and is thus at the same time a comment on the role of the tzadikim (enlightened teachers) in a corrupted society, and how they provide instruction for social change. This in turn reflects back on the important role of the artist/storyteller in modern society, and ourselves as performers/puppeteers retelling and reintroducing this old story to contemporary audiences. And so, in our show, the puppeteers themselves play important roles as characters in the piece.

I know this all sounds very serious, but most of the time we are playing for laughs, and most of the story is told in clowning and hand puppets. It's fast paced, and funny, and features great live traditional and original klezmer music by Craig Judelman (facebook.com/CraigJudelman).

The show makes use of many kinds of puppetry including hand puppets and cranky, as well as giant masks and clowning. The puppets are designed and built from recycled materials by me, Adam (www.adamende.com).

Society of Illustrators Reception

Whew! What a fun night! It was nice catching Anelle Miller and Joan Chiverton and hearing some of the interesting things the Society is involved with.

I rudely interrupted one of G.B. Tran's pals to tell him how much I enjoy his work, only to realize I had met him the previous year through a mutual friend. New York is crazy! Check out G.B. Tran's book, Vietnamerica here.

Here's a photo of one of his award-winning pages. It's really beautiful.

I really like the folks there, they are good people. The show is on view through January 21st, and they have a new animation screening room downstairs, be sure to go see it if you have a moment. It's free and as I mentioned, they are incredibly nice folks.

Status Quo Ante Bellum at the Society of Illustrators

The reception for Illustrators 54: Sequential-Series, Moving and Uncommissioned Works is this Friday from 6pm until 9pm. I am really excited. The admission is $40 for non-members, but the show will be up for a few weeks (until January 21st) so if you're in that neighborhood or need an arty weekend jaunt, I recommend checking it out. A load of incredible artists are represented in the show, and it's a great honor to be included in this year's exhibit and book.

My former mentor and chairman of the Illustration and Cartooning Department at the School of Visual Arts is having a reception for a new (super weird and awesome) series of paintings. His work is sweetly obsessive and low-brow but has a lot of meat-and-potatoes painting skills and really thoughtful motifs in his work...so low-brow without the emptiness...mid-brow? Uni-brow? Waxed goth brow? Whatever you're into. On view until February 4th.

Framing and Puppet Show

I have been busy this month preparing materials for the Society of Illustrators reception and annual I am a part of this year. I've also been helping some new friends with puppet propping for their forthcoming show, The Master of Prayer. (I made a book out of paper bags and cardboard, and drew the illustrations--I neglected to get photos of the book-- but it was a fun assignment!) These guys are incredibly talented and high energy--there will be live music accompanying very dramatic puppet action, with an occasional human soliloquy. I am waiting on details about their upcoming shows this month in Brooklyn and beyond, details will be posted here as I get them.

I drew this about a month ago already...time sure is flying. I have traveled more this year than all previous trips before this year combined, I think. I am really happy to burrow into the studio for the winter and do some printing. The guy at the top right of the page is John Haywood, a great talented tattoo and fine artist from Kentucky who I had the pleasure of meeting in passing in Newport. He plays all sorts of instruments really well, too.

A page from the sketchbook, about something I remembered from the North Carolina trip. There was a really windy storm that woke me up the second night I was there in the cabin, I thought for sure I would blow away. I saw the clouds outside make what looked like two condensation funnels (ack! tornado!) and asked myself what I should do. I settled on going back to sleep and woke up to an absurdly gorgeous day.

Always a work in progress...going to put this in the acid one more time, and add aquatint to the outside border. I like the original drawing better, since it was more delicate. I'm learning a lot of things about how to get that delicate quality in etching and feel the etchings I do later will benefit from all of this stumbling around in the print shop I've been doing. Working on more fun stuff like the actual interior-- story. I think I'm at the point where I am over-thinking and just need to make it. Kinda feel silly making the cover before the inside pages. Onward we go!

A Finely Tuned Beginning

Here's the sketch for the cover for issue two...hoping for this one to be longer, think there is lots of good story to cover. Am turning this drawing into an etching and am really excited about it, gonna be really beautiful. I need to work faster but am still getting a grasp of the printshop schedule and just returned from the Alternative Press Expo, which was really awesome! Met a lot of nice folks and made some new friends. The pre-party was in the warehouse lair of Last Gasp, will update later with some photos of that crazy place.

I went to the Small Press Expo this past weekend with Jen Tong, Li-Or Zaltman and Sara Varon. (I have to add that Sara's new book, Bake Sale, is a pleasure to read--go get a copy!)

Here is a photo of my comic book sketchbook in the hotel the morning we left (I ran out of paper oh no!).

The second is a photo of me nervously and excitedly waiting in line for Nate Powell to autograph my fresh copy of Any Empire. This book is really wonderful. Nate is a very nice guy and said kind things about my comic, which was awesome--he is one of my favorite artists. It was an inspiring weekend full of big crazy comic books. I recommend looking at Anders Nilsen's Big Questions and Craig Thompson's Habibi, just by size alone they boggle the mind with their ambition and raise the bar for making long-form narrative comics.

If you don't buy a copy it is a good place to go anyway, because Gabe is really nice and likes to answer questions and will let you put your paws on everything without making you feel like a broke loser. Here are the inked final pages (for now)! There is much I would change if I had more time. I can't believe I did all the drawing in just 4 weeks. The planning, writing and research (the un-glamorous scribbly bits that don't make it onto the blog) took the same amount of time. I will probably be going back and refining some of the panels and printing new silkscreen cover variations for SPX and APE, depending on the print shop schedule.

Status quo ante bellum, according to dear old Wikipedia, can be translated thus: "The state of things as they were before the war". Additionally, "The term was originally used in treaties to refer to the withdrawal of enemy troops and the restoration of prewar leadership. When used as such, it means that no side gains or loses territory or economic and political rights." I'm interested in how this archaic phrase relates to our growing group of wounded war veterans today. (What war veteran is not wounded?)

Reading Alan's War by Emmanuel Guibert, it is gorgeous. Alan was a G.I. in WWII and went to Fort Knox like Clif. I have only read the first few pages so far and plan to read it over the weekend. There's also a interesting video Emmanuel and First Second (the publisher) put up on YouTube that shows his interesting inking style. Very fun.

This past weekend I went out to the Brooklyn Folk Fest and saw some really great musical performances by a bunch of talented folks. (I need to get out to Jalopy more. You should check them out, too if you haven't yet). At the folk fest, I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Clifton Hicks, who is an incredibly talented and down to earth guy. I am working on a comic with the lyrics to an old time song he plays called "German War". You can see him play the banjo and sing it here.
The first drawing posted here was done from life... I like it better than the others I did, which were done from photos from the internet.
I'm taking a comics class and it's pretty great; the instructor, Sungyoon Choi, (American Widow) is really smart and subtly funny. Non-fiction comics by ladies, totally awesome.
So, I better go get to work!

Here's a drawing I did when I was watching Beautiful Losers the other night, I guess it was last week.

Thought-provoking photographer Tim Hetherington was killed in Misrata this past week. I had just finished reading "WAR" by Sebastian Junger (whom with he traveled to the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan in 2007 to document U.S. soldier's experience there, culminating in some amazing photos and the Oscar-nominated documentary "Restrepo"), and just the other day found myself admiring Tim's Sleeping Soldiers , to the point of wanting to copy them as paintings (Google them or check his site, they are beautiful). The world is so big and so small.

Here are some drawings of my really awesome coworkers. Kip and Richard don't have many photos on their Facebook pages so I will have to try again, but I kinda like the larger one of Kelly (left) and Patricia. It really helps to have a good photo. Without photographers I wouldn't be able to draw a lot of fun stuff, so if you're reading this and take pictures, keep doing your thing, you're awesome.

This was a super fun job I got to do over the weekend for a feature article in the Portland Mercury on escaping junk mail (and sometimes Facebook). The spots were really funny to draw, I am a fan. Thanks Justin!

I'm silkscreening business cards at the printshop but it is really taking so long and has left me eager to work on other projects (like comics!) I'll be at MOCCA with something up my sleeve. I really want to see the talk at 2:30 on Saturday with the Pizza Island ladies. They are so talented and encouraging me to not be sad that comics is often dominated by cranky old men. I'm making a comic book and some etchings based on people I have met in the city that have been or are homeless. Charlie is usually on the Bowery, near some nice graffiti. Banksy spotted him last year and had him pose for this poster:

It was weird seeing this poster at the Sunshine Cinema, only a few blocks away from where it was taken. I asked him about it and he said he got paid $100. That made me kinda mad but Charlie said it was okay. I see Charlie on the way to work most days if the weather is good. He told me sometimes the other men at the housing place try to put curses on him. I tell him that I am sending him good thoughts. I think I gave him California Raisin Hands in the drawing.

My friend Kumori's birthday is today, and since she is really great I drew her picture too. It has been ages since I've done portraits, hoping to do a bunch more.

Lately I have been practicing banjo and taking a banjo class at Jalopy. It's a really cheerful instrument and seems to help with cold weather restlessness. You should learn an instrument too. I am finding out that that whole neighborhood (Red Hook) is full of idiosyncratic old-time musicians and jam makers. (The jar kind and music kind).

It is your responsibility to make arrangements for their return. After six weeks from the date of this letter all files will be purged. It's my birthday today. I got up at 5am and made some funny self portraits. I have been thinking alot about Margaret Kilgallen, who is one of my favorite artists. She lived in the Mission in San Francisco and played the banjo and wrote on trains and painted funny ladies and pretty leaves. She died of breast cancer three weeks after her daughter was born in 2001. I have wanted to do a portrait of her for awhile, and am really happy with this piece.

I drew these on Saturday at my friend Diana Ho's, listening to Radiolab. I have a crush on Jad Abumrad, even though he looks like Woody Allen and John Cusack put together. It was fortunate I knocked these out all at once, because the following three days were spent in bed with a fever. I'm all better now, though! Etching is not going well at all. It will get better. Just a heads up, I will probably be taking down much of the stuff on my website right now and replacing the gouache with ink and digital work. The gouache will be probably tucked in there somewhere though so don't get too sad.
